The public footpath across this field (WN 5/6) has, in July 2023, been completely obstructed by overgrowing maize. This path forms part of many recommended walks on this site. There are simple alternative routes as follows, also shown on the downloadable map below.

Northbound diversion

Applies to the following walks: Creech Hill from the East, Batcombe and its Bottom, Northern and Southern views of Bruton.

On reaching the gate at the top of Cheeks Lane take the permissive route cut through the maize, heading just to the right of a small barn on the edge of a wood.

Go into the wood, and turn right on reaching the track. Follow the track to its end and turn right up the drive to reach the B3081 and the route of your walk.

Southbound diversion

Applies to the following walks: Creech Hill via Brickhill and Huish Lane, Lamyattt.

Turn right down the drive to Coombe Farm (through a new wooden gate, which is always open) then almost immediately take the footpath on the left into the wood.

Ignore the small path turning right down the hill, and follow the track ahead as it runs along the top of the wood, before heading downhill through houses to become Higher Tolbury. At the small junction keep straight ahead down St Catherines Hill, turning left along the High Street at its bottom. Go along the High Street to the junction at its eastern end, and turn right down Patwell Street to rejoin the route of your walk.
