The much used footpath from Batcombe to Spargrove has been closed by the County Council as a result of two problems. It is not known how long the footpath will remain closed, but permission has been given for a closure of up to two years. This closure affects the Batcombe and its Bottom, Batcombe the Long Way Round and various of the Batcombe, Pick and Mix routes,
The first is a December 2024 tree collapse near Batcombe Bottom Farm at the end of Baileys Lane, which has taken out two footbridges in spectacular fashion (as illustrated) making the right of way impassable.
There is a two minute diversion route immediately to the north, through a gate, into the wood, turning left onto a farm track then out through the gate at the end to rejoin the original route. Sadly as the farm track is not a public right of way this route cannot be recommended. The diversion does, however, make the Batcombe and its Bottom route walkable.
The second closure, nearer to Batcombe at Mill Farm has been caused by an unsafe footbridge. There is currently no alternative route.
